The signs may change with age, but the restriction can remain at the root.

What Exactly Is a Tongue Tie and How Does It Affect Tongue Movement?
A small tether in the wrong place can turn natural movement into a constant limitation.
The frenulum is the small band of tissue connecting the tongue to the base of the mouth. In some people it is short, thick or attached too close to the tip, which restricts how far the tongue can lift, extend and move sideways. Similar restrictions can affect the upper lip. In our clinical terms, the real issue occurs when it disturbs the movement of the jaw line and overall mouth functionality.
Why Does Tongue Movement Matter in Tongue Tie?
The tongue does more than shape speech. Its movement can influence how we swallow, breathe, eat, and rest.
The tongue-tie situation usually restricts how you swallow, eat, speak, and perform oral functions and even affects your airway support. Additionally, the tongue should rest against the palate, and that gentle contact influences how the upper jaw develops through childhood. When your tongue sits low, the palate tends to grow narrower and higher, which affects the space available for teeth and for the airway. What Happens During a Tongue Tie Release Procedure?
The release itself can be brief, but the goal is to create greater freedom of movement where restriction once stood.
The release is carried out with a dental laser, which is quick, precise and involves very little bleeding. For infants it typically takes a few minutes, and feeding is usually offered immediately afterwards. Older children and adults are treated under local anaesthesia. We have seen that most families often get surprised by how straightforward the appointment turns out to be.
Step 1. Assessment and consent
We explain our findings, what the release would achieve and what it would not, and answer everything before you decide.
Step 2. Comfort
Topical or local anaesthesia as appropriate for age. Infants are settled and swaddled comfortably.
Step 3. The release
The restricted tissue is released with the laser. This takes only a few minutes.
Step 4. Feeding or rest
Babies are fed straight away where possible. Older patients rest briefly before going home..
Step 5. Aftercare
You are shown the stretches or exercises to do at home and when to return for review. This stage matters as much as the procedure.
What Is the Aftercare After Tongue Tie Release?
The release creates the opening. Thoughtful aftercare helps the tongue learn to use its newfound freedom.
Healing takes one to two weeks, and gentle stretches during that time help the area heal open rather than reattaching. For older children and adults, tongue exercises or myofunctional therapy help the tongue learn to use its new range, since a restricted tongue rarely knows what to do with freedom straight away. Will it fix my child's speech?
