Restoring Damaged Teeth With Dental Crowns

Preserving your natural tooth is often the first priority. A custom crown can restore its strength, function, and appearance when enough healthy tooth structure remains.

When a tooth has cracked, broken or been heavily filled over the years, a crown is often what keeps it in your mouth rather than losing it. It covers and holds the tooth together, protecting what remains from splitting further. Where a tooth has already gone, a bridge closes the gap using the teeth on either side. Both are about keeping your bite intact.

Dental Crowns for Strengthening and Protecting Damaged Teeth

A filling repairs a smaller area. A crown covers and protects the remaining tooth when greater strength and support are needed.

Not every damaged tooth needs one, and we will always suggest the least invasive option that will work. A crown becomes the right answer when there is not enough sound tooth left to hold a filling safely.

Commonly needed for (icon list):

  • A cracked or split tooth
  • A large old filling that keeps breaking away
  • A tooth after root canal treatment
  • Heavily worn or shortened teeth
  • A tooth that has been badly damaged by decay
  • Replacing an old crown that has failed or darkened at the edge
  • Finishing an implant

Types of Dental Crowns for Front and Back Teeth

Porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, and other crown materials can offer different advantages in appearance, strength, and durability. The right choice depends on the tooth, its function, and your smile goals.

Material Best suited to
Zirconia Back teeth and heavy bites, where strength matters most. Modern zirconia also looks convincingly natural.
E max Ceramic Front teeth, where translucency and light behaviour matter more than raw strength.
Layered Porcelain Highly visible teeth needing the most lifelike result, hand layered by a ceramist.
Porcelain Fused to Metal An older, robust option still useful in specific situations, though rarely our first choice for visible teeth.

Note under table: We will recommend the material your tooth and your bite call for, not the most expensive one on the list.

Dental Bridges vs Dental Implants for Missing Teeth

Both can replace missing teeth, but they work differently. A bridge uses support from neighbouring teeth, while an implant provides an independent foundation for a replacement tooth.

A bridge is quicker, involves no surgery and is usually less expensive, but it relies on the teeth either side being prepared to carry it. An implant leaves those neighbours untouched and preserves the bone underneath, though it takes months rather than weeks. Neither is universally better. If your neighbouring teeth are already crowned, a bridge often makes excellent sense. If they are healthy and untouched, we will usually suggest protecting them.

Why Do Crowns Sometimes Fail or Come Loose?

Metaphor line: Porcelain rarely gives way without being asked to.

When a crown chips, loosens or keeps needing recementing, the bite is usually the reason. A tooth taking more force than its neighbours, or a jaw that grinds through the night, will eventually find the weakest point. Dr. Rashida measures how your teeth meet with T-Scan before and after fitting, so your crown carries a fair share of the load rather than all of it.

Dental Crown and Bridge Treatment in UAE: Visits, Preparation and Final Placement

Most crown and bridge treatments involve two main appointments, with the tooth prepared first and the permanent restoration fitted after the laboratory stage.

1

Step 1. Assessment

We examine the tooth, take imaging where needed and check whether a crown is genuinely the right answer.

2

Step 2. Preparation

Under local anaesthesia, the tooth is shaped, keeping as much healthy structure as possible.

3

Step 3. Digital scan and shade

A 3D scan replaces impression trays, and the shade is matched against your own teeth in natural light.

4

Step 4. Temporary

You leave with a comfortable temporary crown that looks and functions properly while yours is crafted.

5

Step 5. Fitting

Your crown is tried in, checked for fit, shade and contour, and adjusted against your bite before it is finally cemented.

Dark Lines Around Old Dental Crowns: Replacement and Cosmetic Options

Dark or grey margins around an existing crown can result from the crown material, gum changes, or the underlying tooth. An assessment can determine whether replacement or another cosmetic solution is appropriate.

That dark margin usually means an older metal-based crown, receding gum, or both. Replacing it with a modern all ceramic crown resolves it in most cases. Come and let us look, and we will tell you whether it needs replacing now or simply watching.

Dental Crown and Bridge Longevity: How Long Can They Last?

Well-fitted crowns and bridges can provide long-term tooth restoration, but their lifespan depends on oral hygiene, bite forces, material, daily habits, and regular dental care.

Well-made crowns commonly last 10 to 15 years and frequently longer. The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth beneath it can, particularly at the gum line, so cleaning around the edge matters. Keep your regular hygiene visits, wear your night guard if we make you one, and tell us early if it ever feels high or sensitive.

I broke my teeth while climbing and had only five days to get everything done. Dr. Rashida was the only one who could deliver in that timeframe—scans, fillings, everything. It was smooth, efficient, and gave me not just a perfect smile but a functional one. Truly an amazing experience at Le dente Clinic.

Questions Patients Ask Us Most About Crowns and Bridges

Dr Rashida Awards

Does having a crown fitted hurt?

Preparation is done under local anaesthesia and most patients find it comfortable and unremarkable. Mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal and settles.

How much of my tooth is removed?

+

Enough to make room for the crown and no more. Conservative preparation is deliberate here because the tooth underneath carries the restoration for the next decade.

Will it match my other teeth?

+

Yes. Shade is matched against your teeth in natural light, and for front teeth the ceramist can layer the porcelain to reproduce the translucency of enamel.

Can a crowned tooth still decay?

+

The crown cannot, but the tooth beneath it can, usually right at the gum margin. That is why cleaning around the edge and keeping hygiene appointments matters.

How long does a bridge last?

+

Commonly 10 to 15 years, depending on the supporting teeth, your bite and how well the area is cleaned underneath. We will show you how to clean beneath it properly.

Is a same-day crown available?

+

Where a case suits it, faster routes exist. We will discuss what is realistic for your tooth rather than promising speed that compromises fit.

What if my crown comes off?

+

Keep it, do not attempt to glue it, and call us. Often it can be cleaned and recemented, and we will also check why it came off in the first place.

Can I whiten a crown?

+

No. Whitening only lightens natural teeth, so if you plan to whiten, do it first and we will match the new crown to your brighter shade.

What do crowns and bridges cost in Dubai?

+

It depends on the material and the number of units involved. You receive one flat price after your consultation, and it does not move.
